Amanda Peet is a fantastic choice to anachor Emmerich's apocalyptic tale.

Most recently known for her role in the overly self-congratulatory and ultimately doomed television drama, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", Peet has never been given a chance to be the focal point of a major motion picture.

I think she's more than capable.

"2012" will tackle the Mayan belief that the world will end in 2012. The film will undoubtedly treat us to a smorgersboard of natural disasters. Hold your breath for volcanic eruptions, drastic weather events, earthquakes and some fire from the sky.

Peet should prepare to spend a good amount of time in front of a green screen.

"2012" fits nicely next to the other films on Roland Emmerich's resume, namely, 10,000 BC, The Day After Tomorrow, Godzilla, and Independence Day. Notice a pattern here?

Emmerich's films have been hit and miss. The concept of the world ending will always bring out a certain group of moviegoers and "2012" will look at one of the most talked about end-world scenarios of our time.

Done right, "2012" could be a box-office blockbuster.

Casting Peet is a good step in that direction.
